What is your opinion on these two road bikes?

I am in the market for a road bike and I was wondering if the carbon fiber fork is going to make a huge difference. I am not sure I can really tell that big of a difference actually riding it. I am currently looking at the Trek 1.1 (no carbon fork) and the Giant Defy 3 which has a carbon fork. The Trek is about 599 at my LBS and the Giant is 779. Both are equipped with pretty equal shimano equipment. What do you think?

The problem with the Trek is that it's not even worth upgrading. Putting an aluminum fork on a road bike in the year 2010 is just goofy. I like Trek, but this was a tacky maneuver to get a sub-$700 road bike on the market, given that the components are already about as low as you can go anyhow.

But, the $599 price sounds better than the $660 I saw listed otherwise.

Giant has a good name, and the frameset would certainly be worth upgrading as you grow as a rider. I thought these were supposed to list for $750, though.

If you have local dealers for Specialized, Jamis, and Kona, take a look at their offerings, too. The Allez can be found for under $700 at some shops, and it's very much upgrade-worthy as is the Defy.

The most important thing is to get a good fit on whatever you do get.
